Long before drilling, you need a clear understanding of your geology to develop your field safely and efficiently. Recovery through a deeper understanding of the subsurface not only ensures wells (and their predicted paths) are positioned effectively, but they are developed accurately and efficiently, without compromising on safety.
It is not uncommon for wells to be shut-in or sidetracked due to unforeseen complications. We wanted to know if our AI Fault Interpretation Service could be used in a “real-life” scenario to reveal geological hazards and ensure drilling safety and as a result, maximise production revenues.
In 2013 the Tern development well (210/25a-A49) encountered wellbore stability issues which led to the subsequent sidetracking of the well. Using data provided by the UK Oil & Gas Authority, we put our AI Fault Interpretation Service to the test to investigate the subsurface which could have subsequently led to a successful drilling of the original development well.
Within minutes, our AI Interpretation platform was able to reveal the presence of the previously unidentified faults, leaving our interpreters time to piece together the full geological story. Not only did we identify the fault in question, we were able to visualise a complete interpretation of the structure and observe how the fault could have been missed. Click here to read more.
“For forthcoming wells in this area, it is suggested that when faulting is known, wellbore stability issues are always planned for to avoid or reduce any further potential problems that wellbore instability can cause.”
